This is just as heartbreaking for us, as it is for you. The more volunteers and support we get, the more opportunities we can provide.

HerUpland Community members will always have the first chance to register for our events

Not a chance! Our hunt camps are designed specifically to provide you with the tools and resources necessary to be an educated, ethical, and effective hunter. Following 2.5 days of classroom time, you have the option to hunt with 1-3 others, including a HerUpland Field Mentor, who will help answer questions and ensure safety.

We only pursue wild birds in wild places; locating and harvesting game is not guaranteed.

Absolutely not, however, HerUpland Community Members receive first chance to sign up with the possibility of the event filling before it becomes available to the public.

No, we are not able to provide transportation to and from our events. However, we do provide an attendee list for registrants to fill in their information to connect with each other and make travel arrangements, if they prefer. There are often short trips around camp to different skills sessions, where people often carpool. If you are bringing a dog to one of our events, plan to fully accommodate travel and kennel options on your own.

At HerUpland, we are committed to providing exceptional experiences for all our participants. We understand that life can be unpredictable, and plans may change. Therefore, we have developed the following cancellation policy to accommodate such uncertainties while ensuring the sustainability of our events.

Cancellation Policy:

  • 90 Days Before the Event: Participants who cancel their registration more than 90 days before the event start date will receive a full refund, minus a 10% transaction fee. This fee covers the administrative costs associated with processing cancellations and refunds.

  • 60 Days Before the Event: Participants who cancel their registration 60 to 90 days before the event start date are eligible for a 50% refund of the registration fee. This policy is in place to help us manage the logistics and financial commitments made in anticipation of the event.

  • Less than 60 Days Before the Event: No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 60 days before the event start date. At this point, we have made significant investments in the event based on the expected number of participants, and refunds are not feasible.

Travel Insurance:

We strongly suggest that all participants consider purchasing travel insurance to protect their investment in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or other emergencies. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind and financial protection.

  • Recommended Provider: We recommend Global Rescue for comprehensive coverage options that can suit various needs and budgets.

Why This Policy Matters:

HerUpland strives to make our events accessible and affordable, with pricing under $1,000 to ensure that a majority can participate. Achieving full capacity is crucial for us to maintain these prices and deliver the quality experience you expect. The cancellation policy helps us manage the financial and logistical challenges that come with event planning, allowing us to continue offering these unique opportunities.

Acknowledgement:

By registering for a HerUpland event, participants acknowledge and agree to this cancellation policy. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making HerUpland events enjoyable and sustainable for all involved.

HerUpland offers a variety of scholarship opportunities aimed at supporting youth and collegiate participants who are passionate about upland hunting and conservation. Annually, around 20 scholarships are awarded to eligible individuals who wish to participate in HerUpland events but may require financial assistance. These scholarships are made possible through the generous support of the HerUpland Network Community Members along with private donors, reflecting a community-driven effort to foster engagement and education in upland hunting.

The funding provided by these scholarships can cover various costs associated with attending HerUpland events, such as registration fees, accommodations, and other related expenses, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder passionate individuals from engaging in valuable learning and field experiences.

In addition to the yearly scholarships, HerUpland may offer extra financial assistance opportunities to those in need. These are occasionally available and are designed to further support participants’ ability to attend HerUpland events, including camps and educational sessions.

To stay informed about these scholarship opportunities and any additional financial assistance offers, HerUpland encourages interested parties to subscribe to their newsletter. By doing so, individuals will receive timely notifications about application periods, criteria for eligibility, and details on how to apply, ensuring they do not miss out on these valuable opportunities to engage with the upland hunting community and enhance their skills and knowledge through HerUpland’s events.

A chaperone is required for all attendees under 18 years old.

A chaperone plays a pivotal role in ensuring a fulfilling and safe experience during the event. The primary responsibility of the chaperone is to supervise and guarantee the safety of the youth participant throughout the entirety of the camp. Given the nature of our camps and limitations on space, chaperones will not engage in shooting activities, either at targets or in the field. However, they are expected to accompany their youth in field activities, hence the requirement for appropriate hunting attire, including blaze orange gear, to ensure visibility and safety.

Chaperones are obligated to be present at all shooting events to oversee the youth participants, though their presence is not necessary during classroom instruction segments. Should chaperones wish to utilize this time to hunt independently, while their youth are engaged in non-shooting educational sessions, they are encouraged to do so.

The HerUpland Youth Scholarship extends its benefits to cover one youth participant, their chaperone, and one dog, facilitating attendance at dog training camps for youths aged 6 to 17 years. While chaperones are crucial for providing support and supervision, they do not partake as active participants in the camp’s activities.

In appreciation of their role, chaperones will receive complimentary meals and lodging during the camp. Additionally, they are invited to attend various skills seminars and demonstrations to enrich their camp experience, although they will not be active recipients of instructional training (wingshooting or dog training). This structure ensures a supportive environment for the youth participants while also respecting the boundaries and limitations of the chaperone’s involvement in the camp activities.

Chaperones are encouraged to register for full registration if they would like to receive shooting/dog training instruction and hunt along with field mentors.

Yes! Bring enough food for your dog throughout the weekend as well as a good supply of training treats. Ideal training treats are small and soft that doesn’t require prolonged chewing.

Absolutely! While our dog training camps are modeled around several different testing venues and often used as preparation for a test or trial, our ultimate goal is to help attendees prepare their dogs for hunting season.

This is a ‘pointing dog camp’, while your dog does not need to be purebred to attend, it nor you will benefit from this camp if the dog does not have any pointing dog tendencies as it relates to upland hunting.

If it rains, we still slay! Activities continue as scheduled at HerUpland unless it is a downpour or thunderstorm. Some camp locations also have indoor venues we could utilize.

Our dog training program is able to host 20 campers and 20 dogs. In addition, there are approximately 10-12 volunteers.

Camp is a place for people who are willing to spend some quality time training their dog in an outdoor setting. Dogs need to be reasonably well-socialized and friendly with other dogs and people. The dog camp experience will be different from person to person and from dog to dog. If you have concerns or questions about HerUpland camp being right for your specific dog situation, contact team@herupland.com so we can discuss it. At times we will consult with one of our camp trainers or the camp vet in order to determine if a particular dog is appropriate for camp.

The food at camp is typical, hearty, camp fare. Breakfasts may include an assortment of yogurt, fruit, as well as breakfast burritos or pancakes. Salad is available during lunch and dinner. Lunches may be sandwiches, hamburgers, or make-your-own wrap. Dinners in the past have included such things as grilled chicken, soup or pasta. A camp favorite is our wild game feast on Saturday nights. The Squad will do their best to meet special health dietary needs.

We require that all dogs be up-to-date on their rabies vaccines (we do accept the 3-year rabies vaccine). We also require current vaccines or titers for distemper and parvo. Bordatella is strongly recommended but not required. We do accept titers for those who vaccinate less frequently. Dogs should be free of fleas before attending camp. We recommend some form of tick prevention prior to camp. If your dog has some type of health issue which makes vaccination contraindicated, please contact us so that we can discuss your situation.

We take safety very seriously at HerUpland. In addition to requiring that all dogs be free of contagious diseases and parasites before camp, we hold a “Keeping Your Dog Safe” talk during the camp orientation. We have a veterinarian hold a skills seminar to educate our campers about signs of stress and overheating, tick and quill removal, the importance of warming your dog up before strenuous activities, tailgate checks, and field first aid. Campers are also provided with information regarding nearby animal hospitals.

You are responsible for keeping your dog cool, or warm. You are responsible for having a safe place to contain and keep your dog during training and when we leave camp for dinner. Plan accordingly.

Any dog displaying signs of aggression towards people or other dogs will be asked to leave with no refund.

No, sorry. Our registration policy is 1 person and 1 dog.

We hold youth events and provide youth scholarships specifically to get youth involved. Our policy is that one registration includes one person with one dog. We encourage youth to apply for our scholarship opportunities which are available at all of our events.

Our policy is that one registration includes one person with one dog. We don’t have audit positions, and we don’t allow bystanders. Those allowed onsite at our events must be a registered attendee, or volunteer.

Having a bitch in season does not preclude participation but does require accommodation. If you think your female may come into season during camp, please let HerUpland know as soon as possible.

Our locations tend to be remote, so plan ahead and pack accordingly.

No properties that we train at are fenced in. If your dog does not have a reliable recall, bring a checkcord.

The Squad does their best to accommodate various dietary needs. Please be sure to let us know at least 2 weeks prior to camp if you have special dietary needs.

Camp does take place in a large outdoor setting, and at times there can be a lot of walking. A person does not necessarily have to be “fit” to enjoy camp, but should be able to spend time outside in various weather conditions, walk up small hills, and be comfortable getting a little muddy/dirty.

We know life happens, we really do and over the years a lot of good people with great dogs have had to cancel their camp registration, often once the deadline has passed for any type of refund or credit. If you are concerned that you may have to cancel your camp registration or you just want the security of knowing that if something unforeseen were to happen, we strongly recommend that you consider purchasing Travel Insurance.

Hunting Skills Camp FAQ's

We spend 2.5 days consumed with indoor and outdoor classroom time. We cover bird biology, state hunting regulations, ethics of hunting, concepts of conservation, navigation, habitat identification and participants receive a firearm safety course and professional wingshooting instruction.

The following 1.5 days are optional if you would like to put your new found skills to work to scout and pursue the upland species you learned about.

The physical requirements for HerUpland hunting camps encompass both the classroom and field components of the program. These requirements ensure that participants can fully engage in both indoor and outdoor activities, as well as optional mentored field hunts. Here are the key physical requirements:

Classroom and Shotgun Shooting Instruction (First 2.5 Days):

  1. Field Hikes: Participants should be able to take short field hikes during the initial 2.5 days of indoor and outdoor classroom time to learn about habitat. While these hikes may not be as strenuous as the later field hunts, a basic level of fitness and mobility is necessary.

  2. Standing Stamina: During the shotgun shooting instruction, participants will be required to stand for extended periods, as shotgun shooting typically involves shooting while standing. Having the stamina to stand for four hours is important.

  3. Shotgun Fitting: Those using a shotgun that is poorly fitting and lacks a pad may experience shoulder pain. It’s advisable to have a shotgun that is well-fitted to your body to minimize discomfort and potential injury.

Optional Field Mentored Hunt Groups:

  1. Climbing Ability: If participants choose to join the optional mentored hunt groups, they should be able to climb up to 2,000 feet of elevation. This may involve challenging, uneven terrain and steep ascents.

  2. Endurance: Participants will need to hike at elevations and/or through dense cover for at least 8 hours per day, with breaks for lunch. Maintaining a high level of endurance is crucial to cover ground effectively and participate fully in the field hunts.

  3. Carrying Equipment: Participants are required to hike with the added weight of a shotgun, water supply for themselves and their dogs, snacks, and ammunition. Carrying this equipment throughout the day can be physically demanding and requires sufficient strength and stamina.

  4. No Early Departures: For the safety and cohesiveness of the group, individuals with physical limitations that may result in the need to leave early are not accommodated. This policy ensures the group can stay together and complete the day’s activities safely.

It’s essential for potential participants to assess their physical fitness and ensure they are adequately prepared for the specific activities they intend to participate in. While the classroom and shooting instruction may be less physically demanding, the optional field mentored hunts require a higher level of physical fitness and endurance. Staying in good physical condition and preparing accordingly will contribute to a safer and more enjoyable experience.

HerUpland hunting skills camps are designed to cater to a broad range of experience levels, from brand new participants to experienced upland enthusiasts. The program is structured in a way that benefits individuals with varying levels of familiarity with upland hunting. Here’s how different experience levels can benefit from these camps:

  1. Brand New Participants:

    • For individuals who are entirely new to upland hunting, the camp offers a structured introduction to the sport. The initial classroom and field instruction provide essential knowledge about habitat, shotgun shooting, and other fundamental skills.
    • These participants can learn from scratch, gaining a solid foundation in upland hunting, gun safety, and conservation practices.
    • The optional mentored field hunt groups provide newcomers with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced mentors.
  2. Intermediate Participants:

    • Those with some prior experience in upland hunting can use the camp to enhance their skills and knowledge.
    • The classroom sessions may offer a deeper understanding of habitat and hunting techniques, allowing them to refine their skills.
    • The shotgun shooting instruction can help participants improve their accuracy and marksmanship.
  3. Experienced Upland Enthusiasts:

    • Even experienced upland hunters can benefit from the camp. They may appreciate the opportunity to learn advanced techniques, share their knowledge with others, and refine their skills.
    • Experienced participants are encouraged to hunt on their own, or with other experienced hunters on the optional field days to enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded enthusiasts.

The camps are inclusive and are designed to accommodate the diverse needs and goals of participants. Whether you are starting from scratch or looking to take your upland hunting skills to the next level, HerUpland hunting skills camps provide a supportive and educational environment for all.

Participants at HerUpland hunting skills camps are allowed to bring their dogs, but there are specific requirements and restrictions in place regarding the eligibility of dogs and their behavior. Here are the key points related to bringing dogs to the camp:

  1. Eligibility of Dogs:

    • Participants can bring their dogs to the camp if the dogs have been exposed to gunfire and have prior hunting experience.
    • The camp is not designed for dog training, so it’s essential that dogs already possess the necessary hunting skills and behavior. Our dog training camps are designed specifically for this purpose and we highly recommend attending one if your dog doesn’t have hunting experience.
  2. Crating Requirements:

    • Dogs brought to the camp must be crated in the lodging provided. They are not allowed to roam freely in cabins or sleep in beds.
  3. Schedule Considerations:

    • The camp’s schedule is tightly packed with a 2.5-day classroom skills seminars, and dogs must be able to remain crated for 4-5 hours at a time. They can be let out during the lunch hour.
  4. Leash and Clean-Up Requirements:

    • Dogs are required to remain on a leash at all times while at the camp location.
    • Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs.
  5. Aggressive Behavior:

    • Dogs displaying any form of aggression or reactivity with other dogs will not be tolerated, and such dogs are not accommodated at the camp.
  6. Recommendation for Novices:

    • For participants who are novices to hunting, it is recommended to leave their dogs at home. This allows them to focus on learning without the added responsibility and potential distractions of a dog.

These guidelines ensure the safety and comfort of all participants and their dogs at the camp. Participants should carefully consider their dog’s behavior and experience level before bringing them to the camp, and ensure they can meet the camp’s requirements for dog care and behavior.

To prepare for HerUpland hunting skills camp, participants should follow a set of tasks and requirements to ensure they are well-prepared for their learning experience. Here’s a breakdown of the preparations they should undertake:

  1. Download onX Hunt App and Offline Maps:

    • Participants should download the onX Hunt app on their mobile devices.
    • Utilize the app to download offline maps of the surrounding camp locations. This is important for navigation, safety, and understanding the terrain.
  2. E-Scouting and Waypoint Selection:

    • Participants are expected to engage in e-scouting activities using the onX Hunt app or other tools.
    • Identify and mark at least 3-5 waypoints on the app to designate ideal upland habitat locations.
    • Be prepared to explain why these specific locations were chosen, considering factors like terrain, cover, water sources, and other habitat features.
  3. Required Documentation:

    • Participants must sign HerUpland’s participant waiver. This is a standard legal requirement to ensure everyone’s safety and understanding of camp guidelines and rules.
    • Ensure that you possess the necessary hunting licenses required by the state for the specific game being pursued. A copy of this license will be requested as proof.
  4. Virtual Learning Sessions:

    • HerUpland will provide virtual learning sessions before the camp.
    • Attend these sessions to gain valuable insights into using the onX Hunt app and to receive general camp guidelines.
    • These sessions often include a Q&A portion where participants can get clarification on any concerns or questions they might have.

By completing these tasks and requirements, participants will be well-prepared to make the most of their experience at the HerUpland hunting skills camp. Proper planning and understanding of the tools and guidelines provided will contribute to a successful and enjoyable learning experience in upland hunting.

  7. Self-Sufficiency: These camps encourage self-sufficiency and a DIY approach. Participants are expected to take an active role in camp life, which includes tasks like building fires, preparing meals, and making the most of the harvested birds, such as using their feathers for art.

  8. Work-for-Reward Philosophy: The camps promote the idea that participants get out of the experience what they put into it. The more effort and commitment a participant invests, the more confident and competent they become as a hunter.

In summary, HerUpland hunting skills camps are dedicated to empowering and educating women in the art of hunting, offering a holistic learning experience that goes beyond just shooting skills. These camps are a unique blend of education, self-sufficiency, camaraderie, and ethical hunting values, aimed at building a community of strong, confident, and competent female hunters.

Falconry Camp FAQ's

This camp is designed to introduce the beginner, aspiring falconer, or new falconer to flying game hawks
on wild quarry. This is a fully immersive camp designed to introduce you to many faucets of falconry
from the various species of hawks, falcons and eagles that we fly, to the various game species that we fly
them on. You will have opportunities to handle hawks, as well as fly with accomplished falconers and
their various raptors, as well as network with falconers who have been flying successful game hawks for
many years. We will have seminars about falconry, it’s origins, its development in the US, as well as the
ecological diversity of the southern Arizona landscape. You will learn basic husbandry, raptor care and
handling, equipment building, field craft and the steps to becoming a falconer in the US. You will spend
a lot of time in the field with falconers and their birds, learning the practical application of falconry as a
hunting sport.

Falconry is a hike intensive sport! You should expect to hike between 8-10 miles per day, in varied
terrain. Arizona is famous for it’s softball & basketball sized rocks, so good boots with ankle support are
highly recommended.
*If you have any mobility limitations, please contact us. There may be reasonable accommodations that
we can make to help you experience this camp and the hunts. Our campground is ADA friendly.

Definitely not. In fact, this camp will be geared toward the aspiring falconer, future apprentice, or those
who are curious about what the life of a falconer is like on a daily basis.

Current falconers will find this camp beneficial if you’d like to expand your horizons on hawking styles.
Current falconers may also find this camp beneficial if they wish to expand their knowledge of hunting
with different species of hawks, or eagles. The Arizona landscape offers opportunities to see desert
hawking and quail hawking like you may not get to experience in other landscapes. The quarry of this
meet will be quail, desert cottontail, and jackrabbits.
There will be 2 seminars which the existing falconer may find repetitive to the knowledge they currently
have; the Introduction to Falconry Seminar (day 1) and the Apprentice Seminar Breakfast (last day). All
other seminars will be educational to both the current and aspiring falconer alike.

If you are a current falconer, you are welcome to bring your bird. Our facility is both bird and dog
friendly. However, you will not have an opportunity to fly your bird within the group. The camp is jam
packed with seminars and educational sessions, as well as hawking with our field mentors. To ensure
that everyone has a great experience and gets to see top notch field craft, our field mentors have been
carefully selected for their successful game hawks that fly well in groups, and their ability to coach our
new and aspiring falconers on field craft, scouting, and quarry management.

This is also NOT a bird training camp. The training and development of your current falconry bird is
something that needs to be addressed between you and your sponsor/mentors. This is not the camp to
help fix training or entering problems, as we will not have the time available to fly personal birds.

If you are a current falconer, you are likely familiar with the concept of a falconry meet. This is not a
falconry meet. This is an education packed, fully scheduled, highly focused camp dedicated to
education, knowledge, and promoting ethical, responsible game hawking. There will not be the normal
down time, or opportunity to fly you personal hawks as is normal for a falconry meet. There will be no
weathering yard or attendant to watch your personal birds during the day.

-Water bottle or Hydration pack – we will be spending our hunting days doing long walks in the desert.
You will want to have plenty of water on you. If you already own and like to carry a hydration pack, you
wont regret bringing it along.
-Sunscreen – going to back to that long walks in the desert thing…
-Camera – Falconry, as well as the beauty of the south Arizona desert offer lots of opportunities for
photography! If you are prone to be shutter happy, bring your camera along!
-Good hiking boots and desert attire – breathable long-sleeves, and long pants will be your friend on this
trip, as will a hat of some type, and sunglasses. Rattle snakes are also out year round in Arizona. If that
is a concern to you, snake chaps wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
-Brush pants/chaps – the desert is known for things that like to poke you. If you have particularly
sensitive legs, you might find it more pleasant to wear some brush chaps or brush pants.
-Binoculars – Raptors fly far and fast! You wont regret having a set of binos with you. If you don’t have
any, no worries. They aren’t an essential item. But if you have them, bring them.
