With warmer weather and summer training days upon us, it’s important to employ strategies to keep dogs cool while they work, after they work, and while they’re restrained awaiting their turn at the line. We’ve 12 compiled ways to do that. Have things to add to this list? Let us know @herupland on Instagram.
Use water
1. Take your pup for a swim before and after they work.
2. Park near water to let the water help cool the air near your dog.
3. Provide lots of water the day before and the day of training to ensure your dog is well hydrated.
4. Not near a body of water, soak towels and put one in the crate with your dog and one draped over the crate.
Find, or create, shade:
5. Park in the shade.
6. Park so that the sun hits the opposite side of the car that you dog is in.
7. No shade, use a heat reflective blanket to block the sun off the car.
Maximize airflow
8. Stake your dog out in the shade, or use a shade tent.
9. Keep windows and hatches open.
10. Use fans.
Check in
11. Stay with your dog after they work to make sure they drink water and cool down.
12. Always check in on your dog regularly. There are a couple pieces of tech that can help with this, like Waggle and Garmin Tempe. Keep in mind that nothing is a total substitute for going to the car and looking at your dog.
Remember, dogs can overheat easily, and that can be deadly. Do everything you can to keep your dog cool during summer training. Your pup will thank you.
